More than a dozen patients at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center in West Virginia have reported instances of sexual assault, and many of the allegations name a single physician as the assailant.
In early September, a news station spoke with an anonymous patient who claimed that he was one of more than a dozen veterans who were sexually assaulted by a doctor while seeking care at the veteran’s hospital. The Beckley Medical Center did not deny the allegation and stated that the physician was no longer employed at that hospital.
The VA Office of Inspector General is currently working with local and federal law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the allegations and announced that steps are being taken to ensure immediate safety of all patients within the hospital. The ongoing investigation comes weeks after the VA Inspector General’s Office announced a string of suspicious deaths in another West Virginia medical center.
United States Attorney Mike Stuart stated that his office has been made aware of the sexual assault allegations made against a physician at the Beckley VA medical center and that they are participating in the investigation as well.
Unfortunately, many former servicemembers across the county are not treated with the care and respect they deserve while they seek medical care. Physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel may take advantage of veterans while they are especially vulnerable.
